This book provides the investigator, the educator, and law enforcement agencies guidance and examples of both effective and ineffective informant development and management.
Abstract
Chapter 1 defines an informant and contrasts informants with sources of information. Chapter 2 covers the development of informants and factors that deter and factors that facilitate development and cooperation. Chapter 3 discusses the motivational factors of informant development. Guidelines, policies and procedures for informant management are the subject of Chapter 4. The chapter includes the necessary skills of the investigator for effective informant management, guidelines for proper documentation of informant activity and suggestions for informant protection. The chapter is valuable for future recruitment of informants, agency reputation and professionalism as viewed by the community served by the law enforcement agency. Chapter 5 discusses activity designed to protect informants. Chapter 6 reviews the laws regarding informant activity and protection. Chapter 7 includes a more detailed examination of administration records and documentation suggested for proper informant management. The book concludes with Chapter 8 and considerations for informant development for crimes of the future in the information age and high technology computer-driven society.
