Although many technological innovations are available to police departments, there is no substitute for the basic fundamentals of police training.
Abstract
Technology, in the form of the latest weapons and ammunition, is essential in police work, but there is no new firearm that will improve a police officer's shooting ability like spending many hours on the range. A police officer's foundation of skills consists of solid basics perfected through continuous hard work. When police training is cut back in a department or is designed to be taught in less time, two important areas of the training disappear: fundamentals and proficiency testing. Tips to enhance and reinforce police training are offered to achieve goals related to knowledge, verbal and physical skills, professionalism, safety, teamwork, and commitment. 2 photographs
