This article summarizes the projects profiled in this special issue of the "Journal of Drug Issues," projects that focus on applied community-based drug-abuse treatment research problems.
Abstract
Three articles address methadone maintenance programs. One article identifies predictors of treatment retention in enhanced and standard methadone maintenance treatment for HIV risk reduction, and another evaluates outcomes of methadone maintenance 1 year after admission. The third article suggests strategies for improving the methadone treatment process and outcomes. Four articles focus on issues in residential drug treatment programs. One article presents an effective model of prison-based treatment for drug-involved offenders, and another considers factors that influence the effectiveness of therapeutic communities. Participant observation of a therapeutic community model for offenders in drug treatment is described in a third article, and the fourth article discusses recruitment into treatment of homeless, mentally ill, and chemical abusing men. One article on case management programs recommends how to improve substance abuse treatment access and retention by using this approach. Day treatment programs are addressed in three articles, with attention to methadone maintained clients, client satisfaction compared with residential care, and day reporting centers as an alternative for drug-using offenders. The remaining three articles consider multimodality and other eclectic programs. For individual articles, see NCJ-182707-20. 4 references
