This packet presents "Briefing Notes" that summarize the results of the Home Office's (Great Britain) Policing and Reducing Crime Unit's examination of what works in addressing domestic violence.
Abstract
The study began in the spring of 1999. The Home Office definition of "domestic violence" is "any violence between current or former partners in an intimate relationship, wherever and whenever it occurs." The violence may include physical, sexual, emotional, psychological, or financial abuse. One of the Briefing Notes focuses on the assessment and management of the risk of domestic violence. This includes a review of the extent of domestic violence and the risk factors for women associated with the onset of domestic violence. Another Note considers the use of the criminal law in reducing domestic violence; it addresses recent efforts to improve the protection of victims of domestic violence through legislation, notably the Protection from Harassment Act of 1997. A third Briefing Note summarizes research that examined the civil remedies currently available to protect women and children from domestic violence, along with the effectiveness of these remedies. Other Briefing Notes provided in the packet summarize research on the policing of domestic violence, accommodation provision, health services, multiagency efforts in addressing domestic violence, outreach and advocacy approaches, women survivors' views, meeting children's needs, perpetrator programs, and monitoring costs and evaluating needs.
