Abstract
Each inmate was sentenced to serve under one of the four kinds of correctional programs, namely, prison, drug addiction treatment center, training center, or detention center. In 1998 there were a total of 16,744 admissions, out of which 14,525 (87 percent) were sentenced to prisons, 1,776 (11 percent) to drug addiction treatment centers, 232 (1 percent) to training centers, and 211 (1 percent) to a detention center. This report is divided into four sections. Section One provides an overview of the demographic, socioeconomic, and criminal characteristics of the sentenced persons. Section Two summarizes key statistics on the sentenced persons by correctional program. Section Three contains detailed statistics on drug addictions, and Section Four presents selected comparative statistics for 1997 and 1998. These sections are preceded by a summary of key points, followed by six charts that show the historical trend of receptions of prisoners and inmates by major characteristics from 1982 to 1998. 31 tables
