This video describes a special award to civic authorities in Lockerbie, Scotland, for their actions after the crash of Pan Am Flight 103.
Abstract
The special award was given to the Dumfries and Galloway Regional Council for their extraordinary actions after the crash of Pan Am Flight 103 in Lockerbie, Scotland, on December 21, 1988. The local police, while carrying out their official responsibilities in examining the crash site, made special efforts to locate victims' personal belongings and return them to relatives. Some went so far as to develop film in victims' cameras so they could match clothing to victims. Local citizens washed and cleaned garments and other items before returning them. The video shows the Scottish memorial sites as well as a memorial cairn in the United States. The cairn is built of 270 stones, one for each victim. Family members of survivors describe some of their experiences of the exceptional kindness of the Scottish people.
