The use of capital punishment affects the overall criminal justice process, including the nature and conditions of other sanctions, and the relationship between capital punishment and other penalties has not been addressed adequately. In looking at the debate between advocates of restorative justice and opponents of capital punishment, the author examines the use of restorative justice interventions in cases involving serious or violent crime, the effectiveness of capital punishment in deterring crime, and retribution. He also discusses the impact of the death penalty on victims, victim reactions to restorative justice, humanitarian issues associated with capital punishment, and implications of restorative justice and capital punishment for community corrections.
