This report provides statistics regarding mentally ill offenders who were under restriction orders and were admitted to, detained in, or discharged from hospitals in England and Wales in 1998.
Abstract
A total of 2,776 offenders were in hospitals at the end of 1998, an increase of 5 percent over the previous year. This increase was similar to the average yearly increase in recent years. The number of offenders admitted under hospital orders increased from 218 in 1997 to 235 in 1998, while the number recalled to hospital declined from 106 to 72. The number transferred from prison to hospital declined from 746 in 1997 to 737 in 1998. A total of 1,062 offenders were admitted to hospitals in 1998. This number was 30 fewer than in the previous year. Three hundred forty-five restricted individuals were released into the community in 1998. Figures, tables, and reference notes
