Abstract
The document presents 12 suggested actions each for teachers, principals, parents, students, law enforcement officers, and community residents. Parents can join with other parents to discuss violence problems, concerns about youth in the community and sources of help to sharpen parenting skills. Students can start a “peace pledge” campaign, in which they promise to settle disagreements without violence, reject weapons and work toward a safe campus for all. Teachers can quickly report to the principal any threats, signs of or discussions of weapons, signs of gang activity, or other conditions that might invite or encourage violence. Law enforcement can work with principals and parents to start safe corridor and block parent programs to make trips to and from school less worrisome for students. Principals can establish “zero tolerance” policies for weapons and violence. Concerned citizens can help to strengthen links between school services and the network of community services that can help students and families facing problems. Resources, references
