Established within Alaska's Department of Public Safety, the Council plans and coordinates services to victims of domestic violence and sexual assault, their families, and perpetrators of such offenses. In coordination with authorities in the fields of domestic violence and sexual assault, the Council develops, implements, maintains, and monitors crisis intervention and prevention programs. This coordination includes the provision of emergency safe housing, counseling, education/outreach services, and technical assistance to programs. The Council has provided funding to 21 victim services programs and to 9 batterers intervention programs in the State. The Council continues to work with victim advocates, law enforcement, prosecution, corrections, batterers intervention program staff, and other important groups to increase safety for victims, increase reporting by victims, train all those involved in the community response to victims of both sexual assault and domestic violence, and to hold batterers accountable for their violence. The Council has also taken a lead role in the implementation of the Governor's Domestic Violence Summit, the Violence Against Women Act, and a number of other statewide coordination and strategic planning efforts. Additional work needs to be done to provide victims with longer term support to enable them to build a life outside of the violent relationship and to provide increased and needed services to children who are victims of sexual and physical abuse or who witness violence within their homes.
