This manual presents hundreds of recommended actions for citizens in Great Britain to take to increase their personal and residential security, prevent theft of their automobiles and other possessions, and contribute to community crime prevention efforts.
Abstract
The introduction notes that most crime is committed against property rather than against people and that few crimes are carefully planned. Advice on personal security emphasizes the importance of making sure the home is secure, avoiding giving personal information to a stranger, varying the route when jogging or cycling, and making sure that a vehicle is in good condition before a long trip. Additional guidance focuses on the actions to take and resources to contact after a sexual assault, domestic violence, or other assault. Further recommendations focus on racial harassment, help for elderly people, prevention of alcohol and drug problems, and children’s safety. Other suggestions discuss burglary prevention when at home or away from home, prevention of vehicle theft and thefts from cars, computer hardware security, and police-community partnerships and other community crime prevention efforts.
