This is a client workbook for use in a therapy group attempting to change men’s abusive attitudes and behaviors.
Abstract
The workbook includes everything needed to complete a domestic abuse program. Part 1 includes all the intake handouts. Part 2 is the Domestic Abuse Group Member Booklet and includes all the individual group member tasks. Part 3 includes all the educational handouts that are discussed in the 20-minute educational section of each weekly group. The educational handouts are divided into 12 units: (1) Abuse and Its Effects; (2) Stress and Stress Management; (3) Anger; (4) Self-Talk; (5) Shame and Empowerment; (6) Culture of Origin; (7) Assertiveness; (8) Communication and Conflict Resolution; (9) Self-Esteem and Healthy Relationships; (10) Parenting; (11) Women’s Perspective on Abuse and Violence; and (12) The Ongoing Recovery Process. This treatment model is structured and ongoing; it can be adapted to individual needs. Men begin the program by going through an intake consisting of four to six 50-minute individual counseling sessions, generally a week apart. If a man is accepted into the group, he will begin attending a weekly 2-hour group and is expected to make a time commitment of at least 20 weeks in the group; most men require 30 to 40 sessions to complete the program.
