Motorola’s iDEN technology is a wireless digital communications system that integrates the capabilities of a digital telephone, two-way radio, and alphanumeric pager with an Internet microbrowser, e-mail, fax, and two-way messaging. The latest feature is an accessory kit that will give users the ability to e-mail digital photos wirelessly. The handsets are Internet Protocol (IP) addressable; each phone has its own IP. Users can send and receive short text messages directly onto a four-line LCD screen on the handset. Users can send longer messages via e-mail. The police officer can forward the message to a fax machine or computer e-mail address to make a hard copy. One model offers three-way calling, a list of the last 10 numbers received or sent, and alternative phone lines. Accessories for all phone models include a slim battery, vehicular battery chargers, hands-free car adapters, an earpiece with lapel microphone, and a leather carrying case. These phones take advantage of Nextel’s Direct Connect wireless service and provide direct access to similarly equipped team members for less than the cost of a cellular call.
