IBIS aims to save time and money for all involved and to improve police safety. The model called the IBIS identifier should be ready for delivery at the end of this year and will capture thumbprints and mugshots and receive text and mugshots from databases with criminal histories, warrants, and images. It also has a silent assist button. The IBIS Investigator model will be available in 2001 and will offer a higher-resolution camera to make images of latent fingerprints at a crime scene, a digital voice recorder, and a geographic information system. A pilot test of the IBIS Identifier will begin in 6 agencies this month. The design of the device keeps police safety in mind by avoiding the use of a cable and by being made of plastic.
