This book explores how research is done in the related fields of criminology and criminal justice.
Abstract
The main sections of the book address criminological research and methodology, research that uses quantitative data, research that uses qualitative data, and ethical and political issues in criminological research. Chapters pertinent to criminological research and methodology focus and an overview of science and research, dimensions of research, theory and research, methodological issues, and the reading of other people's research. Seven chapters discuss research that uses quantitative data. these chapters cover quantitative research designs, quantitative criminological measurement, experimental research, sampling, survey research, nonreactive research and available data, and the analysis of quantitative data. Four chapters pertain to research that uses qualitative data. Chapters discuss qualitative research design, filed research, historical-comparative research, and the analysis of qualitative data. Topics discussed in the chapter on ethical and political issues in criminological research focus on the individual researcher, research subjects, ethics and the scientific community, the sponsors of research, effects of the larger society or government, and the dissemination and use of research findings.
