The report presents statistics on crashes during Memorial Day, Fourth of July, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year holidays. Data were obtained from the Statewide Traffic Accident Records System (STARS). The report contains historical data from the last 5 years of Missouri’s holiday traffic crash experience, with emphasis on the year 1999. From 1995 through 1999 one person was killed in a traffic crash every 7.7 hours in the State of Missouri. Over the holidays during the same period, one person was killed every 6.4 hours. For specific holidays during 1995 through 1998 and 1999, respectively, data include the following: (1) Memorial Day: 58 killed, 3,710 injured; 9 killed, 686 injured; (2) Fourth of July: 70 killed, 4,502 injured; 14 killed, 701 injured; (3) Labor Day: 73 killed, 3,676 injured; 12 killed, 758 injured; (4) Thanksgiving: 81 killed, 4,237 injured; 9 killed, 656 injured; (5) Christmas: 57 killed, 2,223 injured; 15 killed, 530 injured; and (6) New Year: 43 killed, 2,752 injured; 11 killed, 542 injured. The Labor Day holiday appears to have been the most dangerous for traffic crashes, with one person killed or injured every 6.1 minutes. Figures, tables, notes, glossary
