This report summarizes the progress that an ad hoc intergovernmental committee has achieved in developing a comprehensive international convention against transnational organized crime, as mandated by the United Nations General Assembly in 1998.
Abstract
The General Assembly’s action reflected the recommendation of the Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice and the Economic and Social Council. The committee met eight times during 1999-2000 and planned two additional sessions. Topics included development of the draft convention against organized crime and additional international legal instruments against trafficking in persons, especially women and children; illegal trafficking in and transporting of migrants; and illicit manufacturing of and trafficking in firearms, their parts, their components, and ammunition. The committee also agreed that an effective international legal instrument against corruption was desirable.
