This book contains the Acts of the Conference on Responding to the Challenges of Corruption, Milan, November 19-20, 1999.
Abstract
The Conference provided an opportunity to exchange information on the general factors, characteristics and problems related to corruption, in order to enhance international coordination and cooperation in various anti-corruption activities, including assistance to parliaments for drafting legislation and designing projects and studies. In particular, the Conference attempted to identify the problems related to corruption and their effects on good governance, with special attention to the risks for economic and institutional stability in developing countries and countries in transition. Participants examined relationships between the business world and corruption and the effects on competition, as well as recent data on the estimated amount of capital invested or lost through bribery. Participants considered three types of corruption: street-level (corruption in public administration), business (in the private sector) and top-level (corruption of financial, political and administrative centers of power). Finally, participants discussed prevention, control and educational strategies. Notes, references, appendix, tables, figures, bibliography
