This report presents statistical data on the average daily inmate population in Virginia State correctional institutions and the numbers of probationers and parolees in January 2000.
Abstract
The data came from reports developed by the State’s Center for Information Technologies and by Community Corrections. An average of 26,732 State offenders were in Department of Corrections (DOC) institutions in January 2000, a decrease of 0.6 percent from the 26,883 average inmate population in the previous month and a 1.2-percent increase from the average population recorded a year earlier. The average number of out-of-state offenders housed in contract beds was 3,590 in January 2000. The total average daily population in DOC institutions was 30,322 offenders. The total probation and parole caseload of 38,041 in January 2000 included 5,899 active parolees and 32,142 active probationers. The total caseload increased 0.2 percent from the previous month.
