This report presents statistical data on the average daily inmate population in Virginia State correctional institutions and the numbers of probationers and parolees in March 2000.
Abstract
The data came from reports developed by the State’s Center for Information Technologies and by Community Corrections. An average of 27,008 State offenders were in Department of Corrections (DOC) institutions in March 2000, an increase of 0.8 percent from the 26,782 average inmate population in the previous month and a 1.6 percent increase from the average population recorded a year earlier. The average number of out-of-state offenders housed in contract beds was 3,367 in March 2000. The total average daily population in DOC institutions was 30,375 offenders. The total probation and parole caseload of 37,795 in March 2000 included 5,725 active parolees and 32,070 active probationers. The total caseload decreased 0.3 percent from the previous month.
