The data came from reports developed by the State’s Center for Information Technologies and by Community Corrections. An average of 27,200 State offenders were in Department of Corrections (DOC) institutions in April 2000, an increase of 0.7 percent from the 27,008 average inmate population in the previous month and a 2.1 percent increase from the average population recorded a year earlier. The average number of out-of-state offenders housed in contract beds was 3,322 in April 2000. The total average daily population in DOC institutions was 30,522 offenders. The total probation and parole caseload of 37,930 in April 2000 included 5,703 active parolees and 32,227 active probationers. The total caseload increased 0.4 percent from the previous month.
