Combined Index Offenses reported to police in New York State decreased an estimated 6.9 percent from 1998 to 1999; Violent Offenses (murder, forcible rape, robbery, and aggravated assault) decreased by 8.0 percent and Property Offenses (burglary, larceny, and motor vehicle theft) by approximately 6.6 percent. Within Violent Crimes the largest declines were in the categories of Forcible Rape (13.3 percent) and Robbery (8.9 percent). The largest portion of all Violent Crime was in the category of Aggravated Assault (53.4 percent) followed by Robbery (42.7 percent). More than one-third of Property Crime was attributable to Larceny (67.9 percent of the total). Jurisdictions with populations between 100,000 and 999,999 showed the largest decrease in crime (approximately 8.8 percent), followed by New York City with a decline of 7.4 percent.
