This is a background paper for the workshop on community involvement in crime prevention held as part of the 10th United Nations Congress on the Prevention of Crime and the Treatment of Offenders, April 2000.
Abstract
The paper suggests practical ways for Member States to reduce crime through investment in community crime prevention. It provides examples of prevention involving local government, schools, parents and citizens, police and justice agencies, and the private sector. In addition, it provides an overview of the trends in government support for crime prevention and identifies benchmarks of successful programs. It includes data on sources of assistance, presenting various anchor institutions that furnish technical support, information and guides to good practice, training and exchange of expertise, as well as tools to assist the process and diagnosis of crime prevention. The paper focuses on mechanisms for investing in effective prevention transnationally through a learning-based strategy. The paper includes a section on meeting special needs of developing countries and of countries with economies in transition. Notes
