This description of the organization and activities of the United Nations European Institute for Crime Prevention and Control (HEUNI) focuses on three themes: organized crime, violence against women, and preparation for the Tenth United Nations Congress (Vienna, April 9-17, 2000).
Abstract
The primary objective of HEUNI is to promote the international exchange of information on crime prevention and control among European countries. HEUNI's frame of reference is provided by the United Nations Crime prevention and Criminal Justice Program, as determined by the United Nations Commission on Crime prevention and Criminal Justice. The most important of HEUNI's activities are the organization of seminars and expert group meetings on crime and criminal justice issues of relevance to the European countries; assistance in the provision of technical assistance on request; research; and the collection and dissemination of information on matters within its competence. In addition, to focusing on organized crime, violence against women, and preparations for the Tenth United Nations Congress, in 1999 HEUNI projects dealt with such issues as computerization of criminal justice and the United Nations Surveys on Crime Trends and Operations of Criminal Justice Systems. In 1999 HEUNI was also involved in considerable research, training, information dissemination, and technical assistance. HEUNI has continued to be involved in promoting cooperation among the United Nations Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice Program, the Council of Europe, and the European Union as well as other entities active in Europe. Included in this report are HEUNI's budget and an appended list of HEUNI publications.
