This book represents a compendium of tools for use by counselors who are faced with prejudice-related concerns of crime victims and perpetrators and, as such, provides a thorough examination of racism in contemporary society and psychological and situational factors that precede prejudicial behavior.
Abstract
The first section of the book is devoted to a discussion of prejudice. The first chapter presents theories on the nature of prejudice, and the second chapter reviews the status of prejudice in the United States. The second section of the book addresses counseling styles and prejudice and describes nine counseling models that appear to adequately reflect diversity in the counseling field. The third section of the book introduces a new model, the Multidimensional Model of Prejudice Prevention and Reduction. This model is delineated as representative of multimodal therapy and counseling applications are presented. The fourth section of the book contains two case illustrations of prejudice related to race and sexual orientation bias. Three counseling techniques are illustrated and applied to these two cases. Each technique is representative of one of the three main counseling categories--psychodynamic, cognitive/behavioral, and experiential/relationship. Section Five of the book includes 15 instruments for measuring various forms of prejudice. Each instrument is presented in its entirety, along with scoring instructions and reliability and validity data when available. An annotated bibliography and a glossary are appended.
