In 1998, responding to national and regional epidemiological data indicating methamphetamine (MA) abuse was a growing problem in the United States, the Center for Substance Abuse Treatment (CSAT) initiated a multisite MA treatment study.
Abstract
Through a collaborative approach among CSAT, seven treatment sites, and a coordinating center, the study compared the clinical and cost-effectiveness of a manual, cognitive-behavioral outpatient treatment developed by the Matrix Center in Los Angeles to treatment approaches currently employed by treatment sites. The study also explored technology transfer issues associated with integrating the Matrix approach within existing treatment settings. The coordinating center is in Los Angeles; five treatment sites are in California and two are in Montana and Hawaii. The coordinating center is working with CSAT and study sites to implement the Matrix approach as an integrated multisite study. While the evaluation of the Matrix approach has not yet been completed, several implementation issues have been highlighted that relate to program design, cost, and qualitative assessment. 8 references and 1 table
