Abstract
Articles of book contributors are organized according to six sections. The first section defines the nature of the problem of school violence and includes psychocultural profiles of violent students, violence prevention and intervention strategies, and a social ecology approach to school violence. The second section addresses the etiology of violent young people, with consideration paid to defining school violence victim subtypes, gender and race issues in school violence, and effects of the media on public perceptions of violent juvenile offenders. The third section describes school violence prevention strategies. Chapters emphasize the construction of nonviolent cultures, a systematic approach to violence prevention, violence prevention by promoting virtues, creative counseling strategies aimed at preventing school violence, training for school counselors, and anger management for young people. The fourth section discusses violence in special populations, with emphasis on adolescent suicide, aggression, violence related to homosexual and bisexual suicide, aggression, and hate crimes. The fifth section deals with violence intervention strategies targeting individual, family, school, and counselor training programs. The sixth and final section summarizes the preceding sections and discusses practical implications of violence prevention strategies. References, tables, and figures
