The principles of Sun Tzu are applied by the Singapore Prisons Department (SPD) to rehabilitate inmates and make good citizens out of them so they will be on the right track when they leave prison.
Abstract
The approach of the SPD does not advocate turning prisons into a "holiday camp" but rather believes prisons should function as a place of confinement for those who have committed offenses against society and who must suffer the consequences of their actions. The SPD, however, supports the "human touch" as a method of putting inmates on the right track even before their release. This method extends to inmates' families including children who are emotionally and psychological due to their parent's incarceration. The need for prison officials and staff to develop and practice leadership skills is emphasized. 4 figures
