Abstract
Total felony dispositions for the 13 terms of 1999 dropped by 10.2 percent, compared to the same time period in 1998. The decline in dispositions occurred statewide, with New York City down 12.9 percent, suburban New York City down 12.3 percent, and other upstate areas down 3.7 percent. The total number of felony cases awaiting disposition declined by 1.08 percent, from 17,774 at the close of the 13th term of 1998 to 15,856 at the close of the 13th term of 1999. The decrease in pending dispositions occurred statewide, with New York City down 10.4 percent, suburban New York City down 16.3 percent, and other upstate areas down 10.3 percent. The number of felony dispositions pending for 6 months or more was down 7.5 percent, from 6,290 at the close of the 13th term of 1998 to 5,820 at the close of the 13th term of 1999. The decline in dispositions pending for 6 months or more occurred statewide, with New York City down 7 percent, suburban New York City down 23.2 percent, and other upstate areas down less than 1 percent. Long-term pending dispositions tended to involve more serious crimes, and the State prison sentence rate for such dispositions was high. The number of offenders convicted but still awaiting sentence increased by 3.1 percent between 1998 and 1999 in New York City. 14 tables and 7 figures
