Annotation
Violence against women affects women of all income and education levels and is a basic violation of their human rights, and the author argues government and church doctrines have encouraged violence against women since ancient times as a means of controlling their behavior.
Abstract
The author contends men have been trained to use aggression and violence to resolve conflicts. Until society learns the art of nonviolent conflict resolution, men will continue to use gender violence to oppress women. Further, much has been said about battered women who are often viewed as co-dependent or promiscuous and who are questioned as to why they do not leave an abusive relationship. Because the number of battered women is increasing but services for battered women are inadequate, many more battered women's shelters and related services are needed. In addition, significant efforts are needed to change the patriarchal nature of the male-dominated society and to encourage nonviolent conflict resolution.
