The report contains suggestions from law enforcement leaders in six communities on what constitutes a successful law enforcement-court linkage. Data were taken from a March 2, 2000 conference hosted by the National Association of Drug Court Professionals. Participants considered how proponents of the drug court model might increase support for it in the law enforcement and judicial communities; how to market for other jurisdictions the promise and potential of drug courts; and other crimes or social problems to which the drug court model can be applied. The report discusses application of the drug court model to: (1) DUI Court, which focuses on multiple offenders and requires drugs/alcohol testing several days a week; (2) Mental Health Court, which involves the judge in monitoring mentally ill offenders and ensuring that they have access to a "circle of interveners" who can help them; (3) Domestic Violence Court, with an effort to refocus on treatment rather than punishment and control; (4) Community Courts, to deal with misdemeanor crimes, which can have a pronounced effect on a community's quality of life; and (5) Reentry Courts to assist ex-offenders reintegration into society.
