Views on solutions to South Africa's crime problems are discussed, such as increasing the number of police officers, giving police agencies more resources, and improving police management and efficiency. Consideration is also paid to putting more police officers on the streets and deploying soldiers and military vehicles in residential areas. Both these strategies, however, are expensive and unsustainable. The journal issue acknowledges policing in South Africa is performed by many agencies, such as the South African Police Service, private and corporate security forces, municipal agencies, and a range of community initiatives. The interface between the South African Police Service and other policing groups are discussed, and new relationships being forged between the police, prosecutors, community groups, local authorities, and non-governmental organizations are examined.
