Some of the research reported encompasses a study of the handwriting of visually impaired persons, the chemistry of historical iron gall inks, determination of the age of handwriting by the degree of sulfate's diffusion, the questionable reliability of photocopied documents, and the forensic examination of fire and water-damaged documents. Other research-related papers address patterns left by felt-tipped pens on white board, the identification of copy machines through the pyrolysis chromatography of toners, and the optimized selection of extracting solvents for dating ball-point ink on questioned documents. Some of the technical reports address the deciphering of obliterated writings with a computer-based method, the effect of fingerprint processing on E.S.D.A. impressions, and the various methods of counterfeiting and how they can be detected. Some of the case studies involve the following types of document examination: identification of the origin of an Arabic text written on an unusual support, some useful techniques for matching envelopes, the deciphering of illegible handwriting, the investigation and examination of a credit card forgery, a novel method for identifying the forgery of invoices, and the handwriting examination of unfamiliar scripts.
