The Naval Criminal Investigative Service (NCIS) has developed a program called Safekids to help children who use the Internet avoid becoming victims of sexual predators and to educate parents and teachers about the issue and about actions they can take to prevent problems.
Abstract
The Safekids CD-ROM consists of a multimedia presentation and image-search software. NCIS has also established an e-mail account to assist Navy and Marine Corps parents and children who have non-technical questions or concerns about the Internet or threatening of pornographic e-mails. Safekids teaches children about personal responsibility online, how to protect private information, safety, legal issues such as software piracy, and what to do about threatening e-mail. Parents and teachers learn how to pull down their computer’s history files, restrict web sites, and download and use a program called Searchit, which locates image files on a computer’s hard drives so that adults can see what their children may be viewing. They also learn that e-mail can be as dangerous as the Internet. NICS will provide the Safekids CD-ROM to police agencies at no charge.
