Ten articles report on studies pertinent to forensic investigations.
Abstract
One study reviews progress in the study of the ABO blood group system during the last three decades, followed by a study that examined the factors that may impede dental identification of unknown human remains as well as the practical value of dental evidence in routine forensic casework. A third study applied an inverse PCR technique to type three major alleles (A1, B, and O1) of the ABO blood group by simultaneously detecting separated allele-determining nucleotides of the ABO gene. In the fourth studied reported, the expression of P-selectin immunoreactivty in the kidney under traumatic stress was detected in a forensic autopsy. The fifth article reports on an analysis of allele distributions for nine tetrameric short tandem repeat loci in samples of Chamorros and Filipinos residing in Guam. A sixth study determined whether the postmortem concentrations in body fluids of monoethylglycinexylidide, a major active metabolite of lidocaine, reflect the circulatory state during cardiopulmonary resuscitation following endotracheal intubation using lidocaine. Remaining articles report on autopsy findings in death investigations, which involved obesity sleep apnea syndrome, the identification of species from human muscle-specific beta-enolase, strangulation by a vehicle seat belt, and traumatic avulsion fracture of the occipital condyles and clivus.
