Planning of New Institution (PONI) workshops are a joint effort by the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP) and the Corrections Program Office (CPO). Their goal is to assist jurisdictions in making well-informed planning decisions in connection with development of new juvenile facilities. To date, six workshops have been conducted at the Longmont, CO, National Institute of Corrections Training Academy. The workshops are presented in 16 modules: (1) Historical Overview of Juvenile Justice Management; (2) Distinguishing Juveniles; (3) Mission and Vision Statement; (4) Facility Development Process; (5) Using Data for Facility Planning; (6) Issues in New Facility Staffing; (7) Development of a Space Program; (8) Facility Tour and Debriefing; (9) Direct Supervision; (10) Site Evaluation; (11) Engaging the Public: Case Study 1; (12) Transition and Activation; (13) Taking Control of the Project: Project Management and Life-Cycle Costing; (14) Action Planning; (15) Teamwork; and (16) On-the-Spot Work Product. Technical assistance is available to jurisdictions who request additional assistance and expertise following attendance at a PONI workshop. The success of the first six workshops has encouraged the OJJDP and CPO to continue presenting the workshops through 2001.
