This report summarizes a training course held in Japan from August 30 to November 18, 1999, and sponsored by a United Nations affiliate, the Asia and Far East Institute for the Prevention of Crime and the Treatment of Offenders; the course focused on the effective administration of criminal justice to prevent corruption of public officials.
Abstract
The police, prosecutors, judges, and other officials who attended included 12 individuals from Japan, 10 from Asia, 1 from Oceania, 4 from South America and the Caribbean, 1 from the Newly Independent States, 1 from the Middle East, and 1 from Africa. The training course included 13 lectures by visiting experts, 13 ad hoc lectures, 6 lectures by staff of UNAFEI, individual presentations by participants, group workshop sessions, and visits to agencies and institutions in Japan. The participants examined the current situation regarding the corruption of public officials as well as current problems and solutions in addressing corruption at the levels of the investigation, the trial, prevention, and international cooperation.
