This article profiles Mexico's Federal Centers for Social Rehabilitation, which include three maximum-security prisons, one minimum-security penal colony, and one facility for psychosocial rehabilitation.
Abstract
The maximum-security facility in Almoloya de Juarez began operation November 25, 1991, and the maximum-security facility in Puente Grande opened October 10, 1993. The third maximum-security facility, which is located in Matamoros, will open in the summer of 2000; no information is available on this facility. Information provided on the two operating maximum-security facilities addresses facility size, capacity, and inmate population; inmate characteristics and classification; and services and programs provided to inmates. The Federal Center for Psycho-social Rehabilitation began operation January 15, 1994. It houses offenders who have permanent or temporary mental disorders. In addition to housing mentally ill offenders, it also services those not indicted because of their mental capacities but have been consigned to custody by a court. Although the center was designed to house 48 inmates, both male and female, at the beginning of the year 2000 it was holding 176 male inmates. This article provides information on inmate characteristics, including prevalent diseases; staff training; and programs. The Federal Penal Colony Islas Marias began operating on May 12, 1905. The families of inmates with good conduct can live in the camps of this institution. This article provides information on the inmate population, inmate classification, and inmate programs.
