This study attempts to determine general, common, and specific features of psychopathology for different types of paraphilias.
Abstract
The study involved a paraphilia group of 64 male sex offenders and a comparison group of 33 male nonsex, nonviolent, non-drug-related property offenders. The study used anger-hostility and social-sexual incompetence constructs to investigate the general, common, and specific features of psychopathology associated with pedophilia, exhibitionism, rape, and multiple paraphilia. The study adopted a specific approach in design and analysis to overcome the methodological problems related to overlapping paraphilic diagnoses. The two constructs were able to distinguish between sex offenders and nonsex offenders and largely between different types of sex offenders. The article suggests future research on the relationships between conceptually similar and dissimilar variables regarding the psychopathology of paraphilias and identifying the relevant constructs. This would help to evaluate the heuristic value of the conceptual framework developed in this study. Tables, references
