This article provides an overview of the Australian, Northern Territory Correctional Services Ending Offending--Our Message Project establishing that the needs of both the offender and the community could be best addressed through an integrated approach to intervention and training delivery.
Abstract
The Ending Offending--Our Message Project, launched in 1999, provides a focus for interventions that range from substance abuse to community maintenance. The project represents an innovative and collaborative approach to interventions for indigenous people in correctional settings. Using art and music as primary mediums and incorporating them into nationally accredited training modules, participants explore, conceptualize and share their stories. The project focuses on the following main themes: reducing recidivism by increasing employment upon release; reducing the negative consequences of alcohol and drug use through exploration of the relationship between alcohol and offending; enhancing the process of restitution and reparation to the community; and fostering partnerships in aboriginal development. Since the project’s inception, strong emphasis has been placed on developing a post-release evaluation and follow-up component. Future project direction will emphasize the exploration of specific themes, including domestic and family violence. In addition, juvenile offenders will be encouraged to participate.
