The book examines the research, philosophies, and practices of the United States juvenile justice system, and explores new ideas and different perspectives from which to view juvenile violence. It provides a new approach to gangs and group juvenile violence and explores the ways group activities influence juvenile delinquency. It uses the increasing number of school shootings in the 1990's as background to an examination of the problems involved in school violence. The book considers occult and satanic involvement by youth and the many and complex issues related to the connection between that involvement and juvenile violence. It reviews traditional as well as contemporary theories of the causes of juvenile violence and possible solutions, including coping strategies that have been shown to work. Finally, it offers ideas for future efforts. The many topics discussed in this book include patterns of violence, the relationship between self-concept and delinquency, youths and guns, youth gangs and the drug market, and television, the media, music, and video games.
