Intended for school and law enforcement leaders, this document assists these leaders in beginning or enhancing programs and strategies that will prevent violence in schools and communities.
Abstract
The presentation first outlines indicators of crime, violence, and drug abuse in schools and communities, and then it turns to a discussion of how police and school principals can work together to develop safer schools and communities. Steps in starting or building such a partnership are listed, along with procedures in assessing problems and assets. The discussion focuses on the look and value of a school-law enforcement partnership; action steps for policies, procedures, and programs; specific indicators for risk behaviors associated with violence, crime, and drug abuse; and strategies for involving youth in efforts to prevent violence, crime, and drug abuse. The document next presents some starting points for action that encompass policies and procedures, training and public education, and programs. After describing practical steps that can be taken in each of these areas, the publication provides three examples of how other organizations have organized their work in crime prevention. Brief descriptions are provided of the work of the Florida Department of Education, North Carolina's Center for the Prevention of School Violence, and the National School Safety Center.
