Under Project Impact, gun-violence strategies and deployment decisions are based on the careful review of incident data obtained from the Omaha Police Department, the Douglas County mainframe computer, and criminal intelligence shared among various enforcement and justice agencies. Service providers and other community groups also benefit from a review of the relevant crime data by developing prevention strategies that are tailored to meet the particular needs of a neighborhood beset by gun violence. Since Project Impact's first operation in May 1999, 11 people have been federally indicted for their involvement in gun violence; 4 have been deported; and 12 have been charged in State court. Project Impact has worked closely with Federal prosecutors, the Immigration and Naturalization Service, and city, county, and State prosecutors in an effort to remove chronic offenders from Omaha streets. Project Impact is also involved in community initiatives designed to deter youth from gun violence.
