This publication contains papers presented at the conference on "Stalking: Criminal Justice Responses," sponsored by the Australian Institute of Criminology and held in Sydney on December 7-8, 2000.
Abstract
The general aims of the conference were to address the current empirical, social, and legal attempts to deal with a crime that incorporates such diverse realms as psychiatric disorders, gender relations, and cyber technology. The major conference topics were categories in explaining stalking, social expressions of stalking, legislative and criminal justice response to stalking, the relationship between stalking and domestic violence, and future protection/prevention. The three papers of a session on "Victims of Stalking" focused on the incidence and nature of stalking victimization in Australia, the relationships between features of stalking and the psychopathology of victims, and a victim's perspective on the social construction of stalking. Three papers addressed "Criminal Justice Patterns Within Australia" in responding to stalking behavior. This was followed by a session with six papers pertinent to stalking in the contexts of work, school, and family interactions. Two papers provided international perspectives on stalking from United States and British representatives; and four papers discussed "Stalking Phenomena," namely community perceptions of heterosexual and homosexual stalking scenarios, stalker profiles, and the infliction of mental injury in stalking behavior. Other conference sessions involved papers on the following topics: the Australian criminal justice system's response to stalking, international research on stalking, and the criminal justice response to and prevention of stalking.
