The goals of the Illinois Violence Against Women Program were to build a criminal justice system that integrated criminal justice agencies and victim services and promote safety and freedom from violence for women and to ensure that victims of sexual assault and domestic violence have access to services appropriate for their needs. The program had the following objectives for Federal fiscal year 1998: (1) to provide services to women who are victims of sexual assault and domestic violence by establishing service sites and/or extending services to victim groups who are underserved or unserved; (2) to ensure that chiefs, sheriffs, and state's attorneys adopt and follow protocols for handling sexual assault and domestic violence cases; (3) to promote multidisciplinary training programs or specialized training directed at parts of the criminal justice and health care systems; (4) to identify and implement measures that document and facilitate assessment of criminal justice agencies' response to sexual assault and domestic violence, including ways that allow for communication of information between officers and other providers; and (5) to implement, test, and evaluate model protocols for and offer innovative criminal justice responses to sexual assault and domestic violence.
