Abstract
Eight offenses served as a Crime Index for gauging fluctuations in the overall volume and rate of crime: the violent crimes of murder and nonnegligent manslaughter, forcible rape, robbery, and aggravated assault, and the property crimes of burglary, larceny-theft, motor vehicle theft, and arson. A total of 68,885 index offenses were reported or known to law enforcement in 1999. Violent crimes reported included murder and manslaughter (60), forcible rape (413), robbery (1,263), and aggravated assault (5,436). Property crimes included burglary (10,149), larceny-theft (45,662), motor vehicle theft (5,417), and arson (485). There were 3,807 domestic assaults reported, and 35 hate crimes. Larceny-theft accounted for 66 percent of the total index offenses. A total of 17,366 index offenses were reported cleared in 1999, a clearance rate of 25.2 percent compared to a national clearance rate of 21 percent. Persons under the age of 18 accounted for 20.7 percent of the 101,261 total arrests reported. Individuals age 12 through 17 represented 10 percent of the State's total population. The report also includes statistics on officers assaulted, and offense and arrest data by county. Tables, figures
