This technical assistance packet lists and briefly describes agencies, organizations, publications, and other entities that can serve as resources for helping prevent juvenile substance abuse and violence.
Abstract
Seven national and statewide organizations are listed and profiled. These include the Center for Substance Abuse Prevention, a Federal agency established to fund and encourage creative and effective efforts to reduce and eliminate alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs; the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention, a Federal agency that sponsors a broad array of research, program, and training initiatives to improve the juvenile justice system as a whole, as well as to benefit individual youth-serving agencies; and the Youth Leadership Institute, a community-based institute that joins with youth to build communities that respect, honor, and support youth. Other organizations profiled are the "Youth in Action" National Youth Network, which builds upon and recognizes the power and importance of youth leadership; Your Time Their Future Positive Activities Campaign, which is a national public education campaign developed by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services; and the California Mentor Foundation, a registered nonprofit organization whose primary mission is to ensure that State and Federal prevention efforts incorporate mentoring as a key strategy to reduce alcohol abuse, drug use, teen pregnancy, academic failure, gang participation, and violence. Seven publications are described, and six community leaders and how to contact them are listed. Six successful community stories are also provided. Information on how to contact all of the listed resources is provided, including names, mail addresses, e-mail addresses, and website addresses.
