This paper reports on motoring offenses dealt with by the police in England and Wales in 1998, 1999, and earlier years.
Abstract
The number of motoring offenses dealt with by official police action or penalty charge notice in 1999 was 9.5 million, down 3 percent from 1998. The number of offenses dealt with by fixed penalty notice issued by the police (including traffic wardens) in 1999 was 3.1 million, down 8 percent from 1998, following no change in 1998. In addition, 4.0 million penalty charge notices were issued by local authority parking attendants in 1999, up 2 percent over 1998, following a 3 percent rise in 1998. There were 2.1 million court proceedings for motoring offenses during 1999, down 3 percent from 1998 following a fall of 1 percent in 1998. The number of speed limit offenses dealt with by police action increased by 9 percent from 891,000 in 1997 to 975,000 in 1998 and increased again by 4 percent to 1,015,000 in 1999. Cameras provided evidence for 551,000 offenses dealt with in 1999. Overall, the cameras provided evidence for 49 percent of speeding offenses dealt with. Notes, tables, figures
