This report describes the activities, operations, and funding of the African Institute for the Prevention of Crime and the Treatment of Offenders and includes proposals to enhance the Institute’s capacity for implementing its programs to strengthen mechanisms for crime prevention and streamline criminal justice administration in Africa.
Abstract
The Institute continued to receive political support from its member countries, its governing board, the United Nations General Assembly, and other United Nations units during 1999 and 2000. However, its financial situation remained precarious. Activities focused on extradition and mutual legal assistance in Africa, trafficking in firearms and ammunition in Africa, corruption, correctional reform, juvenile justice, victimization, and the 10th United Nations Congress on the Prevention of Crime and the Treatment of Offenders. The Institute’s governing board has decided to undertake several efforts to enhance the Institute’s capabilities and resources.
