The program assists innocent victims of crime with medical expenses, mental health counseling, loss of wages, funeral bills related to homicide, cleanup of a residential crime scene, loss of earning power, and other expenses directly related to the crime. The program also covers Nebraska residents who are victims of terrorism in foreign countries. Staff of the Nebraska Crime Commission process claims for compensation. Persons denied compensation have the right to appeal the decision. Funding comes from general fund appropriations, Federal compensation funds, and 5 percent of inmates’ wages from federally certified correctional industry programs.
